Feminist Frequency on race and casting for The Hunger Games
I’m sorry but I can’t agree with this entirely. Although I do agree that Hollywood does whitewash, abso-fucking-lutely they do, I do think that the directing and production team picks based on talent. And if we look at pictures of Jennifer all blond and white looking it doesn’t actually reflect that they gave her pretty decent coloring.
In the movie she’s exactly what I imagined Katniss to look like, not because I’m white, but because to me olive skin and dark hair is Italian or Greek looking, which people consider to be caucasian for some reason. And I think Jennifer looks that in the movie for sure. AND if Katniss was meant to be Native American any number of words could be used do describe her skin color in that manner.
Ever heard of Black Irish? Aka jet black, often straight hair? Black hair, nor olive skin, are not unique to any race. We are all different in many ways. Black, white, blue, orange who fucking cares, Jennifer plays Katniss better than anyone could have. She’s perfect. She could be dressed like Effie and still play Katniss perfectly.
